Non-Uniform wear
Each boy is expected to have at least one full uniform, and to wear the proper insignia upon it. Our troop has a uniform bank of ‘experienced’ uniforms. If a Scout outgrows a shirt or pants, he is encouraged to donate it to the troop uniform bank. If a Scout needs a uniform part, then he can borrow’ a shirt or pant that fits until he outgrows it.
The youth and registered adult members are expected to be in uniform at all Scouting events.
The field uniform consists of the official BSA khaki shirt with proper insignia, BSA green pants, BSA belt, green socks, and appropriate footwear. A white tee shirt or the Troop 612 tee shirt should be worn.
The activity uniform consists of the Troop 612 tee shirt.
Headgear may be either the standard BSA cap, or the Troop 612 cap for most Scout activities.
The troop tee shirts and hats are ordered on an “as needed” basis by one of the troop’s adult leaders. Ask any leader to find out who handles these orders.
Placement of insignia is diagrammed in the Scout handbook inside the front and back covers. Please note that only one temporary patch should be worn. It may be sewn on the left pocked, or can hang from the left pocket button.
The field uniform is to be worn to all troop meetings unless the Scout is directed otherwise due to activities scheduled. Please do not wear dark rubber soled shoes as these leave streaks on the meeting hall floor.
Traveling to a campout, each troop member must wear full uniform. Returning from a campout, full uniform is desired, but if the uniform is to dirty too wear, or damaged, the Troop 612 tee shirt may be worn instead. It is the responsibility of each troop member to insure that his uniform is available to wear. We will unpack an entire truck so a troop member can extract his uniform.
Once at camp the Scouts are encourage to change out of their uniforms as soon as they have set up camp.
The reasons for wearing the uniform are two-fold. First we are a uniformed organization, and we hope that the Scouts will be proud of being a Boy Scout. Secondly, the BSA insurance only covers Scouts who travel in uniform.
For most service projects and fund-raisers the field uniform is required. This is especially the case if the youth or adult member will be in the public view. We represent not only ourselves, and Troop 612, but the entire Boy Scouting movement at these times.
If the service project or activity associated with the fund-raiser will not be done in the field uniform, the Scouts will be notified.
On occasion the troop will be asked by our chartering organization or other community groups to participate in actions where the BSA rules will not allow us to be in uniform. In these instances the Scouts will be notified in advance, and given the reasons why.
When wearing of the uniform would not be appropriate due to rough activity, the preferred uniform is the troop activity uniform.
This consists of the troop T-shirt, troop cap, pants or shorts appropriate to the activity and sturdy shoes.
When activities call for street clothing the following guidelines should be observed. The Scoutmaster has final say in any interpretation.
Clothing with messages or graphics that are political, offensive, or in bad taste should not be worn. Neither should clothing be worn that due to its design or condition could be construed as unsafe or offensive.
Scouts and Scouters should not wear full camouflage or hunting pattern clothing. Neither military drills, nor hunting are part of the Boy Scout program.
