Departure and Return
Each month our troop will go on a campout. Usually this is held on the third weekend of the month, but it may vary depending availability of campsites, or if the Patrol Leaders Council decides to attend a district or council event held on another weekend.
The monthly campout is where most of the Scouting in the troop is done. The Scouts work on advancement requirements and merit badges, go on hikes, sleep under the stars, and do things impossible to accomplish in the city.
Here is where the patrol method shines. Each patrol eats together and establishes its own patrol site.
Each patrol is responsible for developing its own menu, and for preparing its own food. Usually the boys agree on what supplies are needed at the troop meeting before the campout. One Scout will generally buy the food, and inform the patrol members of the cost at the campout. It is the responsibility of the other patrol members to reimburse the buyer for their share at the next troop meeting. Scouts are encouraged to keep the costs to around $5.00 per Scout for each campout.
Patrol equipment is stored at the San Lorenzo Community Church, and it is the responsibility of the patrol to bring the gear that it needs.
Each patrol should be certain that they have enough propane fuel to run their stove and lanterns. If not, they will need to borrow from the other patrols, or improvise. The adults will not loan the Scouts supplies unless weather conditions make it a safety concern.
Each patrol is responsible for returning all patrol and troop gear in a clean and usable condition.
Each Scout should bring their own equipment. (See “What To Bring” below.) Be sure to take into account the activities planned, weather, and season. If a Scout has his own tent, then he can use that. If not, then he can share with another Scout, or borrow one of the troop tents.
Personal electronics are acceptable for use while traveling, but should not be taken out of the vehicle. Any found at the campsite are subject to confiscation by any adult. They will be returned to the Scouts after the campout.
Travel to and from the campout is in full field uniform. Return in the activity uniform is allowed when the field uniform is too dirty or damaged to wear. Travel in a street shirt is never allowed.
Saturday lunch is usually a bag lunch. Each Scout should also have money for a Sunday lunch as these are often purchased on the road. Finally, each Scout should have a quarter so he can call his parents to pick him up upon return.
Each boy attending a campout must have a current medical form on file with the Scoutmaster. No Scout can attend without this form. Registered adults must also have a current medical form on file.
If the Scout must take any medicine, it must be in the care of an adult designated by the Scoutmaster. Enclose the medicine(s) in a zip-lock plastic bag with clear instructions as to when the medicine should be given, how much, in what manner, and any warnings that the adult leadership should be aware of. This includes aspirin, cold medicine, motion sickness pills, and inhalers. In the later case the Scout may be allowed to carry their inhaler so long as the adult leadership knows the circumstances of its use.
Departure from the San Lorenzo Community Church is usually at 7:30 a.m. but may be earlier or later based on the distance or other activities. Each boy should arrive 1/2 hour earlier to help in loading the vehicles.
Return to the San Lorenzo Community Church can be any time between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Check the campout plan for a guideline, but be aware that conditions outside of our control may cause the return of the troop at unpredictable times.
